"New" McDonald had a farm...

With a wind turbine here, and a solar panel there.......
Below are a few of my latest pieces that are now on display at Native Roots Market in Downtown Norman. This series depicts a "futuristic view of the good life" and a hopeful view of a newly revived urban community. Painted on construction waste and rescued cabinetry, these paintings represent two communities and their inhabitants in a simple, flat style drawing inspiration from the works of Grandma Moses. These rural communities are complete with solar and wind energy, rain collection barrels, vegetable gardens, free range chickens and cats and dogs, too! Farmers drive bio-diesel tractors while listening to their MP3s and live in dream homes built with sustainable materials such as cob and strawbale. Urban communities have a mass transit system, rooftop solar panels, and are saturated with small businesses such as yoga studios, herbalists, bakeries, and book shops.

the brightest tent at May Fair '08

May Fair 2008

Well, I made it through another May Fair! This was only my second art festival and let me first say, they are a lot of work! It's funny- long ago when I would attend art festivals I would see the artists, sitting on their tall director's chairs, soaking in the sun, chit chatting with the other artists, and would think to myself, how fun would that be- not a bad way to spend a weekend. But, surprise, it's not really like that! By the first day of the festival, I was exhausted. I had spent so many long nights leading up to the festival painting new material, painting and assembling the structures for the art to hang on, creating signage, printing business cards, and all the other minutia, that by the time Day One rolled around I was ready to sit in my director's chair and take a nap! Until I think of another way that an artist can meet one's 'audience', get direct feedback from art patrons and other artists, while getting a tan and eating footlong corn dogs, I will likely do more festivals! I am grateful to have the opportunity to sell my art, and maybe more importantly I am thankful that my art makes people happy, makes them smile, gives them the 'warm fuzzies' .

Fancy That, Fancy This!

Fancy That is the cute, little, well, not actually little but you almost have to say 'little' when you say 'cute cafe'! It's a cute, little cafe in downtown Norman, OK! They serve yummy casseroles like Poppyseed Chicken, and King Ranch Chicken, make soups from scratch, the best is the Roasted Red Pepper Soup, and have amazing baked goods. FT is kind of known around Norman for their sugar cookies, but if you ever decided to off yourself with brownies, make it the Chocolate Sass brownie! The sugar cookies are off the charts! They can do almost any shape or color imaginable and many times small children have been overheard saying, "I can't eat it Mommy, it's too pretty!" I work there mostly in the colder months when I can't be out gardening for a living, therefore I get to create TONS of sugar cookies for the madness that is Christmas.

What else is so great about Fancy That? Well, my art hangs there! The entire West wall is covered with my fun, silly paintings of children, pets and flowers and along the upper walls are my giant oil paintings. When looking across the entire collection of paintings many people assume it is from several, different artists, but no, it's just me- the many layers of Marcy. There are my favorites 'the blues guys', the 'bar series', inspired by my college bartending days, and then there's the 'lovers', you can guess what they depict, ooh la la. So if your ever in town please check out Fancy That. Heck, if you're coming for an OU game, call ahead and order up some OU sugar cookies, tell 'em Marcy sent you! http://www.fancythat.us/

Medieval inspirations

This past weekend was the Medieval Fair and let me say this first, it was the most beautiful weather EVER for the Fair! It's one of those weird things, it always rains that weekend, which in some part helped set the tone for the whole event but aah, the sunshine was grand! If you're from around these parts hope you made it out. I saw so many inspiring crafts and jewelry. I wanted to run around and tell them all to get on Etsy, but I wasn't prepared. The booth that stands out most in my memory had the most clever name, how could ye forget 'Damsel in this Dress'? They made some of the most gorgeous bodices, vests, jackets I've seen at a Fair. The construction was amazing and the selection of fabrics was....wow. OK, I'm new to this blog thing, but I think this is where I'm supposed to put a link to her blog?
